Why CPR matters
Every year, more than 350,000 people in the U.S. experience cardiac arrest outside a hospital, and fewer than half receive CPR from a bystander before help arrives. That gap matters: people who receive bystander CPR within two minutes of cardiac arrest have an 81% greater chance of surviving to hospital discharge, and a 95% higher chance of surviving without significant brain damage, compared to those who receive no CPR at all. Even CPR started up to 10 minutes after cardiac arrest still gives someone a 19% higher survival rate than no CPR at all.
The reason is simple: when the heart stops beating, the brain and other organs lose blood flow almost immediately, and without intervention, that lack of blood flow can quickly become fatal. CPR keeps blood moving to the brain and vital organs, buying precious time until paramedics arrive.
